For a delicious hybrid twist on apple pie and doughnuts!

Fried Apple Pie "Doughnuts"

Dairy-Free

Ingredients

  • 3-4 large apples (I like to use a mix of Honeycrisps and Granny Smiths!)

  • Grapeseed or vegetable oil for frying

  • Optional: powdered sugar

The Batter

  • 1 c AP flour

  • 1 ½ tbsp white granulated sugar

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

  • ¼ tsp allspice

  • tsp ginger

  • tsp cloves

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 c non-dairy milk of choice (I use almond)

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 egg

The Apple Pie Sugar

  • ½ c white granulated sugar

  • ¼ tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

  • tsp allspice

Directions

  1. Peel and cut the apples into ¼ inch rounds. Cut out the core of each round to form your apple "doughnut" rings.

  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugars, baking powder, spices, and salt.

  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the non-dairy milk, vanilla extract, and egg.

  4. Add the wet to dry ingredients and whisk together until you achieve a smooth batter.

  5. Pour 2 to 3 inches of oil in a shallow pot and heat until it reaches about 365 °F.

  6. Meanwhile, whisk together all of the Apple Pie Sugar ingredients and spread it on a plate to prep for coating.

  7. When the oil is at the right temperature, dip each apple ring into the batter, making sure both sides are fully covered, and carefully place into the heated oil (do not overcrowd the pot; stick to a maximum of 3 rings in the oil at a time).

  8. Fry each ring for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.

  9. Immediately place each fried ring straight from the oil into the Apple Pie Sugar, making sure both sides are evenly coated (the sugar sticks to the oil, so do not wait too long after removing the rings from the oil to coat the "doughnuts!")

  10. Allow the "doughnuts" to cool on paper-towel lined plates for about 5 minutes and optionally coat each in a light layer of powdered sugar before enjoying!
